Children learn responsibility best when effort and reward are clearly connected.
Overview
Many online learning platforms promote free trials to attract new users. However, these trials often require users to enter credit card or banking details before accessing any content.
This requirement creates friction at the very beginning of the experience and can discourage users from exploring the platform. Instead of focusing on learning, users are forced to make a payment decision before understanding the product’s value.
Problem
Many online learning platforms advertise a free trial, but require users to enter credit card or banking details before accessing content. This creates hesitation and lowers trial participation.
Users often feel uncertain about how long they have access and what will happen to their progress once the trial ends.
Opportunity
Free trials are intended to reduce friction and encourage exploration. By removing payment barriers and improving transparency around trial limits, learning platforms can increase engagement and trust.
Goal
Design a learning experience that allows users to begin learning immediately without entering payment details while clearly communicating trial limitations.
Solution
The proposed solution introduces a transparent trial access system that removes the requirement for payment information while maintaining clear communication about trial duration.

Key elements include:

• Immediate access to course content
• Visible trial countdown indicator
• Saved progress after trial expiration
• Clear path to continue learning with full access

This approach prioritizes trust, transparency, and uninterrupted learning.
Current Experience

Many learning platforms require payment details before allowing users to access trial content.

Problem & Opportunity
The Problem
Many online learning platforms require users to enter payment details before accessing a free trial. This creates hesitation and reduces the likelihood of users exploring the platform.

• Payment details required before experiencing the product
• Users unsure when trials expire
• Fear of unexpected charges
• Learning progress may be lost
The Opportunity
Free trials should encourage exploration, not create friction. By removing the payment barrier and clearly communicating trial limitations, the learning experience can become more transparent and user-focused.

• Increase trial participation
• Improve user trust
• Encourage deeper engagement
• Support informed subscription decisions
User Journey:
Starting a Learning Trial
To better understand the user experience, I mapped the journey a learner takes when attempting to start a course trial on a typical learning platform.
This helped highlight where friction occurs and where improvements could create a smoother experience.

Design Opportunity
How might we allow users to begin learning immediately without entering payment details while still encouraging conversion to full access?
Solution Concept
To address the friction identified in the user journey, I designed a trial experience that allows users to begin learning immediately without requiring payment details.

Instead of requesting payment upfront, the platform provides time-limited access to course content. Once the trial period ends, users can choose to continue their learning by purchasing full access.
